Common Places to Find Mold in the Kitchen

It’s common knowledge that mold isn’t something you want living in your home. Mold comes in many different forms, but none of them are good for the health of you or your family. Knowing the common hiding places for mold makes it easier to identify mold early and safely remove it. You can even add these places where mold likes to live in the kitchen to your cleaning list more frequently to help prevent mold growth before it occurs.

Under the Sink

Mold thrives in a damp, dark environment. Under your sink is exactly that! Remove the items under your sink to thoroughly clean and inspect for mold. If you find mold, that means there’s excess moisture under your sink. This can be a result of leaky pipes or condensation. Contact a plumber ASAP to repair your pipes and prevent future mold under the sink.

In the Fridge

The fridge is another spot where mold can hide undetected. Check inside the seal around the edge of your fridge and under your fridge drawers. Small amounts of food or drinks can get into those areas and create the perfect feeding ground for mold. The easiest way to prevent mold in the fridge is to ensure all your food products are properly sealed before putting them away. Occasionally, remove all the items from your fridge for a deeper clean.

Wooden Cutting Boards

Wooden cutting boards can promote mold growth if they’re put away before they’re fully dried out. In general, it’s not recommended to wash your wooden cutting board with water any more than necessary. Wood also needs to be sealed periodically so the water only washes the surface of the board without getting trapped inside. If you find mold on a wooden cutting board, it’s best to toss it out and start with a fresh one.

Trash Can

Your trash isn’t the cleanest place in the kitchen, but it still shouldn’t have mold growing on it. Remove the trash bag to clean the trash can with a bleach-based spray. Allow the can to completely dry before replacing the bag. Repeat this cleaning process periodically and anytime you notice a trash bag got a hole in it. When a bag rips, food and liquid from the trash can leak into the can below. If it isn’t cleaned up, mold will grow.
