Cleaning Products to Use to Kill Mold

Household mold is never fun to tackle, but when you do encounter an issue it’s important that you take action quickly. For mold problems that are only apparent in a small space (roughly a foot in diameter or less), we recommend using household cleaning products.

Some products are more effective than others at killing mold, and it’s also important to make sure you and your family are safe from any noxious chemicals. The following products are recommended to treat a home mold issue:

  • Bleach
  • Borax
  • Vinegar
  • Ammonia
  • Hydrogen peroxide
  • Detergent
  • Baking soda

Although bleach is the best chemical for ensuring all mold is removed along with it’s spores, bleach is very toxic and releases toxic fumes into the air that can be harmful for family members and pets. Always use as directed and it’s always a good idea to create a watered-down solution — the results will still be the same. Ammonia should also be handled with care as it is also very toxic.

Products such as borax, hydrogen peroxide and baking soda are safe to use and effective; they don’t release any noxious fumes either. It’s recommended that you use a water-based solution with a ratio of one cup per gallon of water used.

More organic and environmentally friendly options to kill mold also include tea tree oil and grapefruit seed extract. Although both are quite expensive and may be difficult to find at a local store, these natural cleaning products only require a small concentration to kill mold and it’s spores.
